LG Launches World's First 720Hz Gaming OLED Panel for Esports

LG Display has announced the launch and mass production of the world's first 24.5-inch OLED display panel tailored specifically for competitive esports, featuring a blistering 720Hz refresh rate at a Full HD resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels. The panel achieves a gray-to-gray response time of 0.02 milliseconds, aiming to eliminate motion blur and ghosting in fast-paced competitive gaming genres.

Standard competitive monitors have long relied on the 24-inch class to allow players to capture the entire visual field at a glance. By moving into mass production for this form factor, LG Display seeks to accelerate the adoption of OLED technology in mainstream esports tournaments, where hardware response speed directly impacts player performance.

Reaching a stable 720Hz refresh rate on an organic light-emitting diode panel required proprietary technological development beyond standard screen manufacturing. According to company disclosures, LG Display engineered a specialized driving algorithm integrated directly from the pixel architecture to the driving system. This hardware-software solution ensures that the 720Hz refresh rate operates stably at 1080p resolution without visual degradation.

Traditional Liquid Crystal Displays, whether utilizing edge-lit backlights or Full Array Local Dimming with IPS, VA, or TN panel types, typically exhibit moderate motion blur and response times ranging from 0.5 milliseconds up to over 4 milliseconds. In contrast, the new tandem WOLED architecture relies on independent per-pixel illumination to eliminate backlighting requirements, achieving true blacks, zero light haloing, and peak brightness levels reaching 1700 nits on partner hardware.

OLED panels operating above 500Hz provide near-instantaneous 0.02ms pixel transition times, virtually eliminating motion blur without severe color wash and viewing angle degradation. At 720Hz, the PC must generate and deliver a new frame every 1.388 milliseconds, requiring high-IPC CPUs and enthusiast GPUs.

Global hardware manufacturer ASUS is the first company to integrate LG's new display technology into its product lineup via its Republic of Gamers division. The newly introduced ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG259QWS Ace monitor features the 24.5-inch 720Hz panel, operating alongside other models in ASUS's high-refresh lineup such as the 540Hz ROG Strix OLED XG259QWPG Ace and QD-OLED alternatives.

LG Display is the first and only manufacturer to mass-produce 720Hz Tandem WOLED panels, while competing QD-OLED technology reaches up to 500Hz and 560Hz in the 24.5-inch esports category. The ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG259QWS Ace is scheduled to launch in early Q4 2026 with an official retail price of $1,099 USD.

The ROG Swift OLED PG259QWS Ace has already secured selection as the official esports monitor for the upcoming PGL CS2 Major Singapore 2026, marking a prominent competitive deployment for the technology within the Counter-Strike 2 tournament circuit.

LG Display intends to leverage the introduction of the 24.5-inch esports panel to expand its broader gaming monitor portfolio, which spans screen sizes from 20 inches to 40 inches. Certain models in this wider lineup incorporate the company's proprietary Dynamic Frequency and Resolution technology. Furthermore, the manufacturer is integrating artificial intelligence transformation initiatives across its display development pipelines to widen its competitive advantage against rival panel producers.
