Franchise Structure and Multi-Game Competition Format
The Indian Super Gaming League was introduced on March 2, 2026 as a franchise-based competitive circuit structured around permanent team ownership and multi-season calendars, Indian Startup News reported. The sporting venture was established jointly by Basu and former Route Mobile chief executive Gautam Badalia, who brings more than two decades of background in investment banking and financial markets. The inaugural competition incorporates eight franchises, including football teams Mumbai City FC and FC Goa alongside Chennaiyin FC and Kerala Blasters FC, together with Inter Kashi and kabaddi side Puneri Paltan. Contestants participate in titles including chess and EA Sports FC 26, as well as Call of Duty: Mobile, FAU-G, and Cricket 26, utilising regional preliminaries to select finalists for Vizag.
Leadership Commentary and Sports League Comparisons
Speaking at the rollout gathering attended by film actors Ranbir Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan, Badalia observed that while domestic gaming exhibits scale and enthusiasm, the market fundamentally requires institutional structure. Basu stated that domestic gaming infrastructure must align with international benchmarks to enable Indian competitors to contend on the world stage. Mahindra previously co-established the Pro Kabaddi League in 2014 alongside television commentator Charu Sharma via Mashal Sports, transforming traditional kabaddi into a nationally broadcast commercial enterprise. Badalia explained that the organisational ambition is to mirror the structural transformation achieved by the Indian Premier League in professional cricket by instilling credibility and scale across domestic competitive gaming.
Market research estimates that the Indian gaming market is valued at roughly 3.8 billion dollars and is projected to expand to 9.2 billion dollars by FY29, according to Dealroom.
