Vijay Sethupathi Named First Indian Presenter at International Emmy Awards

Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathi has been selected to serve as an award presenter at the 54th International Emmy Awards. The ceremony is scheduled to take place on November 23, 2026, in New York City. With this appearance, Sethupathi becomes the first Indian actor to present an honor at the International Emmy Awards ceremony. The event represents another milestone for Indian entertainment on the global stage as domestic talent secures international honors. The International Emmy Awards recognize outstanding television programming created and broadcast outside the United States.
Indian Representation at International Emmy Awards
Indian talent previously marked a significant milestone at the gala when comedian Vir Das served as ceremony host in 2024. Das hosted the international gathering after winning an International Emmy Award for his comedy special Vir Das: Landing in 2023. In the broader American television industry, Priyanka Chopra presented at the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles in 2016 alongside Tom Hiddleston. Producer Kavita Gupta, who serves on the board of the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, has actively worked to showcase Indian talent internationally. Gupta previously helped coordinate Das's hosting engagement following his successful awards campaign. At the upcoming 54th International Emmy Awards ceremony, Real Kashmir Football Club is nominated for Best Drama Series and Vir Das' standup special, Vir Das: Fool Volume, has been nominated for Best Comedy Series, according to Cinema Express.
Recent Feature Projects and Diverse Film Roles
Sethupathi has built an expansive following by choosing diverse cinematic roles, earning acclaim in intense thrillers as well as commercial releases. His growing popularity across various language industries has enabled him to reach audiences well beyond regional Tamil cinema. The actor was last seen starring in the period film Baththa, playing a feared gangster operating in 1986 Madras. In the narrative, an eight-year-old child inadvertently locks the gangster inside a school restroom, prompting a transformative personal bond. He will next appear in filmmaker Mani Ratnam's upcoming romantic drama Inji Vellam alongside co-star Sai Pallavi.
Maharaja Hollywood Remake Rights and Global Expansion
In addition to his international awards recognition, Sethupathi's acclaimed 2024 Tamil action thriller Maharaja is slated for a Hollywood remake. The film attracted strong global interest following a successful theatrical release in China, where it collected approximately Rs. 91.65 crore according to box office tracking. Its positive reception across international streaming platforms prompted an American talent agency to secure remake rights for the property. Producer Sudhan Sundaram told The Times of India that negotiations are underway with an overseas agency seeking to attach an A-list lead. Sundaram noted that the production team anticipates principal photography could begin during the coming calendar year. Industry trade reports indicate that the Indian creative team is simultaneously exploring early development on a cinematic sequel to Maharaja.
