Veteran Character Actor Mushtaq Khan Passes Away at 56

Veteran character actor and comedian Mushtaq Khan passed away on Thursday in Mumbai, leaving behind a prolific filmography spanning over three decades in Hindi cinema and television. Industry reports and representatives confirmed his passing, noting that the actor had been undergoing medical treatment following a battle with cancer.

Known for his dependable screen presence and distinct comic timing, Khan built a career playing memorable supporting roles across major commercial hits and television series. His funeral arrangements are scheduled to take place in Mumbai.

Born in Baihar town within Madhya Pradesh's Balaghat district, Khan became a recognizable face across multiple generations of Indian moviegoers. While his career encompassed dramatic and romantic projects alike, he secured a permanent place in Bollywood pop-culture lore through his performance as Ballu in Anees Bazmee's 2007 comedy Welcome. In the film, his portrayal of a disabled hockey player delivered the iconic dialogue, "Meri ek taang nakli hai, main hockey ka bohot bada khiladi tha...", which spawned enduring internet memes and widespread recognition.

His extensive credits extended across diverse cinematic genres, ranging from early romantic features like Aashiqui and Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke to mainstream crowd-pullers including Jodi No. 1, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, and Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. Throughout his career, Khan demonstrated an ability to anchor scenes alongside large ensemble casts, working alongside prominent figures in the Hindi film industry.

In addition to his film career, Khan remained active across television serials, participating in popular broadcasts such as Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi. His passing follows a period of reported health complications that required hospitalisation in Mumbai. Beyond his screen credits, Khan drew media attention in late 2024 when he survived a harrowing abduction ordeal while traveling along the Delhi-Meerut highway. Reports documented that the actor had been lured to Meerut under the guise of an award function before being taken captive near Bijnor, where he was held for several hours and subjected to a ransom demand of Rs 1 crore. Khan managed to escape after hearing the morning Azaan and sought refuge with local residents.

Authorities detailed that the actor was invited under false pretenses in November 2024, held confined in Bijnor, and subsequently escaped after financial transactions were executed via his phone.

The actor is survived by his wife, son, and daughter. Funeral services and final rites are scheduled to be conducted in Mumbai.
