Severe Nor'easter Forces Cancellation of Ed Sheeran Concerts and Major New York Festivals

A powerful weekend nor'easter bearing down on New England and the Mid-Atlantic has forced the cancellation of Ed Sheeran's back-to-back concerts at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, alongside several high-profile music festivals across New York. Concert promoter Messina Touring announced Friday that the Friday and Saturday performances at the stadium, located about 22 miles southwest of Boston, were called off following safety consultations with local officials and severe weather warnings issued by the National Weather Service.

The approaching storm is projected to batter the East Coast with heavy rain, coastal flooding, and gale-force wind gusts reaching up to 65 mph in parts of Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard, and up to 55 mph around the Boston metropolitan area. States of emergency have been declared in New York and New Jersey, triggering widespread disruptions across regional transit networks, including hundreds of flight delays at New York airports.

The severe weather disruption extended across major New York cultural events, forcing the historic cancellation of the Global Citizen Festival in Central Park. Organizers reported that it marks the first time in 14 years that the antipoverty charity event, which had already raised nearly $210 million this year, has been forced to call off its live concert programming on the Great Lawn. The event was scheduled to feature performances by Ms. Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean, among other acts.

Simultaneously, organizers for the All Things Go festival in Queens cancelled their three-day lineup featuring Zara Larsson, Lola Young, Brandi Carlile, and Carly Rae Jepsen, while Brooklyn's CBGB Festival scrapped its weekend schedule, which included headliners Morrissey, Patti Smith, and Interpol. Maryland's Oceans Calling festival also joined the growing list of regional cancellations.

The weather cancellation compounds a turbulent fortnight for Ed Sheeran's Loop Tour, which recently faced lineup changes after rapper Macklemore was dropped from upcoming dates following on-stage political statements. The decision to remove Macklemore followed public statements from billionaire Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots and Gillette Stadium, who cited the artist's recent comments and historical rhetoric. Sheeran subsequently clarified that concert promoters, rather than the artist himself, managed the lineup adjustment.

Ticket holders for the Foxborough stadium shows will receive full refunds, according to tour organizers. Meanwhile, municipal authorities across the Northeast continue emergency preparations as the nor'easter moves onshore.
