Ramayana Takes Monstrous Rs 50 Crore Hindi Box Office Opening Ahead of Diwali

The mythological epic Ramayana, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Yash, arrived in cinemas on November 5, generating a strong start at the Hindi box office. Early trade estimates indicate first-day Hindi collections in the range of Rs. 50 crore to Rs. 51 crore, propelled by broad demand across mass belts. The opening represents the biggest pre-Diwali start, surpassing the previous benchmark set by Tiger 3, which collected Rs. 44 crore on Diwali day. National cinema chains drove substantial momentum on Thursday, generating approximately Rs. 30 crore and contributing roughly 55% of total opening collections.
Box Office Estimates and Pre-Diwali Record Figures
Trade projections indicate that Ramayana will achieve a four-day pre-Diwali opening weekend total in the vicinity of Rs. 210 crore. Box office analysts anticipate collections will expand significantly from Monday through Wednesday, potentially doubling from pre-Diwali levels. While Friday business may experience a customary pre-festive dip, trade reports suggest Saturday ticket sales could top opening levels and approach Rs. 60 crore. The production secured wide distribution across northern territories, with screenings programmed on more than 20,000 showtimes. However, distributor partners implemented a limited theatrical footprint across southern territories, which trade observers estimated curtailed Hindi earnings by at least Rs. 5 crore.
Ensemble Cast and Mythological Portrayal
The cinematic adaptation is helmed by director Nitesh Tiwari and presents the ancient Indian epic across an ambitious two-part saga. Ranbir Kapoor leads the production as Lord Rama, alongside Sai Pallavi as Goddess Sita and Yash portraying Ravana. The ensemble supporting cast features Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman, Ravi Dubey portraying Lakshman, and veteran actor Arun Govil as King Dasharath. The project features Lara Dutta playing Kaikeyi, Indira Krishnan portraying Kaushalya, Rakul Preet Singh appearing as Surpanakha, and Kajal Aggarwal as Mandodari. Veteran actor Ajinkya Deo essays the role of sage Maharishi Vishwamitra in the production. Raghav Juyal is going to play the role of Ravana's eldest son and the crown prince of Lanka, Meghanad, in the second part of Ramayana, according to The Economic Times.
Behind-the-Scenes Production and Franchise Timeline
Speaking about the shooting process, Deo recalled that preparing his look required one and a half hours daily to apply his heavy wig and prosthetic beard. Deo observed that Kapoor also faced physical demands on set while wearing his elaborate royal costume and heavy ceremonial crown. The cast benefited from filming inside temperature-controlled studio soundstages, which provided relief during lengthy production schedules. The feature is produced by Namit Malhotra and Yash under their respective banners, Prime Focus Studios and Monster Mind Creations. The musical score unites Academy Award-winning composers Hans Zimmer and AR Rahman in a high-profile international collaboration. While the first installment arrived in theatres on November 5, the producers scheduled the second installment for release during Diwali 2028. Malhotra said the later date gives the team extra time for extensive visual effects, according to The Economic Times.
