Volvo Expects Higher EV Share in India With EX90 and ES90 Launch

Volvo Car India anticipates electric vehicles will capture a larger portion of its overall sales volume in 2027, driven by the upcoming introduction of the EX90 electric SUV and ES90 electric sedan. Battery-powered models currently represent approximately a quarter of the Swedish luxury carmaker's sales in the country.
The Volvo EX90 features a 106 kWh battery pack, dual-motor AWD producing 456 hp and 670 Nm, and achieves a WLTP-certified range of 625 km.
While declining to provide specific percentage projections for 2027, Managing Director Jyoti Malhotra stated that expanding the electric portfolio will widen the brand's addressable market. Both new models are scheduled for a joint market debut and price announcement on October 12, expanding Volvo's local lineup from four models to six, four of which will be fully electric.
Managing Director Jyoti Malhotra stated that the company remains committed to introducing one new electric vehicle annually in India. The upcoming launch of the ES90 sedan also marks Volvo India's return to the luxury sedan segment following the S90 discontinuation in June 2025.
Local Assembly and Portfolio Expansion
The EX90 and ES90 share Volvo's SPA2 platform architecture and will undergo local assembly at the company's Hoskote manufacturing facility situated near Bengaluru. Local production forms a cornerstone of Volvo's pricing strategy within India's competitive luxury segment, enabling competitive positioning against established rivals.
Market Context and Sales Performance
Volvo retailed approximately 2,000 units in India during 2024 and over 1,700 units in 2025. Government VAHAN portal registration data indicates that registrations between January and September 2026 reached nearly 1,300 units, with electric vehicle registrations crossing 300 units during the same nine-month window. The wider Indian luxury vehicle market grew from roughly 52,000 units in 2024 to surpass 53,000 units in 2025.
Strategic Outlook and Charging Infrastructure
The product expansion coincides with global developments in Volvo's charging ecosystem, including the rollout of seamless authentication features like Plug & Charge across international markets for models equipped with Nvidia computing architecture. Despite recalibrating global timelines for a complete transition to electric vehicles, Malhotra affirmed that the company's ultimate objective remains shifting exclusively to battery-powered vehicles over the long term.
