Volvo Cars Appoints Skoda Chief Klaus Zellmer as New CEO
Volvo Cars has announced the appointment of Klaus Zellmer as its next president and chief executive officer. Zellmer, who currently serves as the CEO of Volkswagen Group's Skoda Auto division, is set to assume the leadership role at the Swedish automaker no later than October 1, 2027. He will succeed Hakan Samuelsson, who returned to the helm in 2025 to navigate the company through a period of significant market volatility and restructuring.
Leadership Transition and Strategic Mandate
The appointment marks a planned transition for the Geely-owned manufacturer as it attempts to stabilize its financial performance and market position. Samuelsson, 75, who previously led Volvo from 2012 to 2022, was reappointed last year to address a slump in share price and the complexities of the industry's transition to electric vehicles. He has confirmed he will not continue in a full-time capacity once his current contract concludes in April 2027.
Volvo Car Chairman Li Shufu praised Zellmer's background, noting his experience across both high-end premium and high-volume automotive segments. The board expects Zellmer to guide the organization through ongoing transformations, including the need to balance Western and Chinese technology stacks to maintain access to key international markets.
Navigating Market Headwinds
Volvo Cars is currently grappling with a challenging macroeconomic environment characterized by U.S. trade tariffs, high development costs, and a cooling in global demand for fully electric vehicles. The company's shares have faced sustained downward pressure, trading near record lows and declining more than 45 percent year-to-date. To mitigate these pressures, the automaker has implemented aggressive cost-saving measures and is actively regionalizing its manufacturing footprint.
Last week, the company outlined a strategy to launch 13 new models by 2030, aiming to double its global market share in electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. This strategy includes a shift toward regionalized product development, with specific vehicle lineups and software configurations tailored for the Chinese market versus Western markets. The company has also been shifting production of key models, such as the hybrid XC60 to South Carolina and the EX30 to Belgium, to better insulate its supply chain from geopolitical trade barriers. Samuelsson and the board will work with Zellmer over the coming year to ensure a seamless handover of these strategic initiatives.
