Electric vehicle manufacturer Ultraviolette is set to significantly scale its manufacturing footprint, targeting a combined annual production capacity of 3 lakh units by mid-2027. This expansion will be supported by a Rs 1,000 crore investment distributed over the next five years across two primary manufacturing sites, according to co-founder and CEO Narayan Subramaniam.
The strategic plan involves the development of the new BIGGA Factory in Hosur, which is slated to provide 2.5 lakh units of annual capacity, alongside an upgrade to the company's existing Bengaluru facility to add 50,000 units. The company expects the first phase of the Hosur plant to become operational between the first and second quarters of 2027, marking a pivotal shift in its ability to meet growing domestic and international demand.
Expansion Strategy and Capital Allocation
The Rs 1,000 crore investment is divided between the two facilities to ensure a robust supply chain and manufacturing capability. Approximately Rs 800 crore is earmarked for the new BIGGA Factory in Hosur, while the remaining Rs 200 crore will be directed toward upgrading the Bengaluru plant. This capital expenditure is intended to support a long-term product portfolio that will eventually include four motorcycles and two scooters.
Subramaniam noted that the company is currently fully capitalized for these expansion plans. However, he left open the possibility of additional fundraising should the pace of electric vehicle adoption in India and abroad exceed current projections. The company is aiming for profitability at the firm level within the next 24 months, a timeline that aligns with its stated ambition to pursue an initial public offering.
Tesseract Scooter Redesign and Launch Delay
Ultraviolette has confirmed a delay in the launch of its Tesseract electric scooter, which is now expected to debut in the first quarter of 2027. The postponement, spanning eight to ten months, follows a decision to fundamentally redesign the vehicle around a 100-volt architecture. This engineering shift necessitated a comprehensive realignment of critical systems, including the battery pack, battery management system, motor controllers, and charging hardware.
Despite the delay, the company remains optimistic about the Tesseract's market reception. Ultraviolette reports that its current bookings and sales pipeline indicate a demand of at least 10,000 units per month for the scooter. The Tesseract is expected to be a key volume driver, as the company works toward a future where its motorcycle and scooter categories contribute equally to overall sales volumes.
International Market Expansion Plans
Exports are set to play a significant role in the output of the new Hosur facility. Ultraviolette expects international shipments to initially account for 15 percent of production, with that figure projected to rise to approximately 25 percent as the company deepens its presence in global markets. The company is currently targeting Europe, North America, and Latin America for its expansion efforts.
Southeast Asia is also under evaluation through various pilot programs. Ultraviolette already maintains an export footprint in 19 European countries, utilizing its existing facility to serve those markets. By the time the company reaches its 3 lakh unit production scale, it expects to have a portfolio of six products available across four continents, solidifying its position as a global player in the electric two-wheeler space.
Future Portfolio and Market Positioning
Beyond the Tesseract, Ultraviolette is preparing to launch the Shockwave electric motorcycle next year. The company's product strategy is built on a diverse portfolio that balances high-performance motorcycles with mass-market-oriented scooters.
