Tata Motors has expanded its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) ownership model to its entire passenger electric vehicle portfolio, covering all six models in its current lineup. The initiative, which previously only included the Tiago EV and Punch EV, now extends to the Nexon EV, Curvv EV, Sierra EV, and Harrier EV. By decoupling the battery cost from the vehicle price, the company aims to lower the initial entry barrier for prospective electric vehicle buyers.

According to Tata Motors, for Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Limited, For initial private registrations, the HV battery warranty provides coverage for 15 years (defined as lifetime) with unlimited mileage, transferring to 8 to 10 years / 1.6 to 2.0 lakh km for subsequent owners.

According to Autocar India, for Indian EV market, India's electric passenger vehicle sector registered record annual sales of 177,415 units in 2025, with Tata Motors anchoring market volume. According to Auto Punditz, tata Motors dispatched 16,042 electric passenger vehicles in August 2026, leading an Indian electric car market that reached 36,593 units (growing 84.9% year-on-year).

While MG originally introduced the Battery-as-a-Service pricing model in India with the Windsor EV, Tata also offered a BaaS plan starting at ₹6.49 lakh when launching a facelifted Punch EV in February 2026.

Understanding the BaaS Financial Structure

Under the BaaS arrangement, Tata Motors treats the purchase as a dual-loan finance product. The vehicle and the battery are financed through separate agreements, allowing for a reduced upfront payment. The monthly battery EMI is determined by factors including the battery capacity, the down payment provided, and the chosen loan tenure. Tata has partnered with multiple finance institutions to facilitate these arrangements, which remain available exclusively to personal users.

It is important to note that the lower advertised prices for BaaS models do not represent a discount on the total vehicle cost. Instead, a significant portion of the battery price is shifted into a separate, ongoing payment structure. Buyers retain the option to purchase any of these vehicles with the battery included in the standard price, making BaaS an additional financing choice rather than a replacement for conventional ownership.

Impact on Entry Pricing and Ownership Costs

The expansion of the BaaS scheme results in substantial reductions in the advertised starting prices of Tata's electric vehicles. The upfront savings range from Rs 2.30 lakh for the Tiago EV to Rs 7.30 lakh for the Harrier EV. For instance, the Nexon EV, which carries a regular starting price of Rs 14.34 lakh, is now advertised at Rs 8.99 lakh under the BaaS model.

Prospective buyers should be aware that the quoted per-kilometre usage costs are indicative figures based on Tata's internal assumptions, typically 60km of daily usage for most models and 44km for the Tiago EV. These figures explicitly exclude electricity costs for charging, as well as maintenance, repairs, road tax, insurance, and other statutory levies. Because the final cost of ownership depends on individual driving patterns, interest rates, and loan terms, the company advises customers to compare the combined monthly repayment of both the vehicle and battery loans against their household budget before committing to the structure.
