German luxury automaker Mercedes-Benz has commenced local assembly of the all-new Electric GLC 400 4MATIC at its manufacturing facility in Chakan near Pune. The rollout establishes Pune as only the second global manufacturing location after Bremen in Germany to produce the battery electric sport utility vehicle.

Pricing Parity and Pre-Booking Demand

Priced at Rs 78.50 lakh ex-showroom in an exclusive AMG Line trim, the Electric GLC is positioned closely against its combustion-engine sibling, which retails from Rs 77 lakh. The narrow price gap is enabled by tax differentials, as the electric variant attracts 5 per cent Goods and Services Tax compared to the 40 per cent tax levied on combustion models. Customer interest surged following the announcement, with the company securing over 550 pre-bookings within the first 36 hours and surpassing 1,000 total reservations. Mercedes-Benz India Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Santosh Iyer stated that the vehicle is already sold out through March 2027, with customer deliveries commencing in mid-November 2026. In October 2022, Mercedes-Benz India began assembling its flagship electric sedan, the EQS, at the Chakan plant in Pune, according to Hindustan Times.

Technical Specifications and 800V Charging

The Electric GLC is the first vehicle manufactured in India built on the dedicated MB.EA-M electric architecture and running the proprietary Mercedes-Benz Operating System. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain generates a combined 360 kW (489 hp) and 800 Nm of torque, enabling the vehicle to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds. A 94 kWh battery pack delivers a certified driving range of up to 711 km under WLTP testing, with identical certification from the Automotive Research Association of India. Supported by an 800V electrical system, 330 kW direct-current fast charging can add approximately 303 km of driving range within 10 minutes under optimal charging conditions. Interior and exterior equipment highlights include a 39.1-inch MBUX Hyperscreen, an illuminated front radiator grille featuring 942 LED pixels, and a SKY CONTROL panoramic glass roof.

Flexible Manufacturing and Leadership Attendance

The vehicle is assembled on the same flexible production line as conventional internal combustion models, utilizing vision-guided robotics and artificial intelligence systems. The assembly rollout was attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar, along with Mercedes-Benz Group AG Chairman of the Board of Management Ola Källenius and Mercedes-Benz AG Supervisory Board Chairman Martin Brudermueller. Mercedes-Benz's cumulative investment in its Chakan manufacturing facility has reached Rs 3,200 crore following an additional Rs 200 crore commitment in 2026. Company historical milestones indicate that the German luxury marque has delivered more than 2.4 lakh passenger vehicles in India to date.
