Mercedes-AMG GT SUV Debuts With Up to 1,169hp and 710kW Fast Charging

Mercedes-AMG has unveiled the production-ready AMG GT SUV, marking the performance division's first full-size sport utility vehicle engineered completely in-house from the ground up. The five-passenger flagship represents the second model developed on the bespoke AMG.EA high-performance electric architecture, following the four-door coupe variant. The range tops out with the GT 63 edition, featuring a three-motor powertrain generating up to 1,169 horsepower and 2,000 Newton-meters of torque.
Manufactured from 2010 to 2014, the SLS AMG was the first automobile entirely designed, developed, and constructed in-house by AMG from its inception.
Automotive analysts estimate the electric sport utility vehicle will carry a price tag between $100,000 and $200,000.
Axial-Flux Powertrain Engineering and Variant Hierarchy
The GT 55 and GT 63 configurations adopt high-output axial-flux electric motors, integrating two units across the rear axle and a third unit driving the front wheels. Mercedes-AMG acquired British axial-flux specialist YASA in 2021 to pioneer compact, pancake-shaped motors delivering superior power density over traditional radial-flux EV designs. The intermediate GT 55 variant generates 816 horsepower and 1,860 Newton-meters, accelerating from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in 3.1 seconds. In contrast, the entry-level GT 53 uses two conventional synchronous motors to produce 544 horsepower, offering a more accessible tier within the performance portfolio.
Battery Architecture, Range Estimates, and Ultra-Fast Charging
The performance SUV utilizes an advanced 800-volt electrical architecture, pairing a 106-kilowatt-hour battery pack with the GT 53 and a larger 128-kilowatt-hour pack in tri-motor models. Official European WLTP cycle assessments certify a driving range of up to 668 kilometers for the GT 53, while the 128-kilowatt-hour battery yields up to 700 kilometers on upper variants. DC fast charging capabilities reach industry-leading speeds, accepting up to 600 kilowatts on the base model and up to 710 kilowatts on the GT 55 and GT 63.
In the AMG GT 63 SUV and the AMG GT 55 SUV, DC charging can add up to 450 kilometres of WLTP range in ten minutes.
Chassis Dynamics and Active Aerodynamic Management
The vehicle measures 5,084 millimeters in length, 2,001 millimeters in width, and 1,656 millimeters in height, riding on an extended 3,040-millimeter wheelbase. Active rear-axle steering offering up to 6 degrees of articulation is equipped as standard to sharpen maneuverability in tight urban conditions. The GT 63 debuts AMG Active Ride Control+ hydraulic suspension, replacing conventional mechanical anti-roll bars with adaptive hydraulic actuators. Aerodynamic optimization includes an active rear spoiler on GT 55 and GT 63 variants that sits flush with the roofline until deployment at 150 kilometers per hour.
Interior Appointments and Practical Utility
Cargo capacity provides 607 liters of luggage volume in the primary rear compartment, supplemented by a 78-liter front trunk for storage flexibility. The cockpit combines a 10.2-inch digital driver instrumentation display with a central 14-inch touchscreen canted toward the driver, alongside an optional 14-inch passenger display.
