As India prepares for stringent new Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency norms under CAFE-3 starting April 2027, automakers are rethinking their powertrain strategies to comply with mandated efficiency levels. Passenger vehicles will need to average 3.996 litres per 100 kilometres by 2027, rising to 3.3273 litres per 100 kilometres by March 2032. While electric vehicles receive favorable regulatory treatment via a super-multiplier derogation factor of 3, mass-market manufacturers face infrastructure hurdles and consumer charging friction that limit rapid EV adoption.

Down To Earth warned that weaker incentives for electrification risk turning a decarbonisation policy into a pay-to-pollute revenue scheme. Under the CAFE-3 buyout scheme, 90 percent of the buyout revenues collected by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency are allocated to state governments based on regional sales volumes.

For Hybrid vehicles, Hybrids provide a short-to-medium-term solution for car buyers who face residential electrical infrastructure hurdles or disputes with resident welfare associations over installing dedicated EV chargers.

To bridge this gap, Kia is betting heavily on regular hybrid technology, bringing the new Sorento three-row SUV to India. Priced between Rs 30 lakh and Rs 40 lakh for the hybrid variant, the Sorento is positioned directly against the Toyota Innova Hycross. The model combines a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine with an electric motor and a 1.49-kilowatt-hour battery, delivering strong urban efficiency.

Hybrid Powertrain Performance and Urban Dynamics

The Sorento hybrid produces a combined output supported by an electric motor that adds 264 Nm of torque and 64 horsepower to the 1.6-litre engine. On open highways, reviewers noted that the conventional automatic gearbox can feel slightly lethargic during sudden overtaking maneuvers because it lacks the e-CVT setup found in competitors like the Innova Hycross. However, once drivers adapt to the throttle response, highway cruising becomes manageable.

The real advantage of the hybrid system emerges in congested urban environments. During media drives in Udaipur, the vehicle's start-stop functionality and frequent battery regeneration allowed the heavy SUV to return between 18 and 19 kilometres per litre, compared with 14 to 15 kilometres per litre on highway stretches.

Seating Comfort and Equipment Layout

Inside the cabin, the Sorento offers a feature-rich environment centered around a dual 12.3-inch curved display layout incorporating the instrument cluster and touchscreen. Passenger comfort is prioritized in the first two rows, featuring 10-way adjustable ventilated front seats with an Ergo Motion massage function on select trims. The second-row captain's seats offer ample legroom and winged headrests, though the third row remains best suited for children or short emergency trips.

Safety provisions span up to ten airbags, electronic stability control, and Level 2+ ADAS capabilities on higher variants. The vehicle also introduces a 220-volt vehicle-to-load system in its hybrid trim, enabling occupants to power small electronic devices directly from the car.

Regulatory Context and Future Drivetrains

While battery-electric vehicles enjoy a derogation multiplier of 3 under CAFE-3 regulations, standard hybrids carry a lower multiplier of 1.6. However, the Indian government has introduced an incentive for flex-fuel capable hybrids, offering a derogation factor of 2.5 for vehicles capable of running on blended fuels. As automotive manufacturers navigate tightening emissions frameworks against consumer demand for heavier, feature-laden SUVs, strong hybrids serve as a vital transitional technology.

Former NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant publicly criticized the credit trading mechanism of the CAFE-3 regulations on X. CAFE-3 mandates a fleet-average emissions target of 78.90 g CO2/km by FY 2031-32, while 12 off-cycle eco-innovation technologies permit deductions of up to 9.0 g CO2/km.
