JSW Motors Patents Chery iCaur V23-Based Electric SUV Design in India

JSW Motors has officially patented the design for an upcoming electric SUV in India based on the international Chery iCaur V23. The patent filings reveal that while the vehicle retains the boxy, off-road-oriented silhouette of its global counterpart, JSW Motors has incorporated several India-specific modifications to the exterior design.

The India-spec version features a redesigned closed-off grille and a distinct alloy wheel pattern compared to the international model. Patent imagery also highlights a unique rectangular element positioned between the C- and D-pillars, a feature absent on the global iCaur V23. Notably, the Indian version is set to include a panoramic sunroof, an equipment upgrade not currently offered on the international variant. The vehicle maintains the signature circular LED headlights with black surrounds, flared wheel arches, and a tailgate-mounted storage box seen on the global model.

While JSW Motors has not released final specifications, the company's India website lists a 430km NEDC range, 211 PS of power, and 292 Nm of torque, with both 2WD and 4WD drivetrain options mentioned. Industry reports suggest the India-spec model will likely utilize the dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) setup found in the international long-range variant, which pairs an 81.76kWh battery with a dual-motor configuration. This powertrain is expected to provide the vehicle with the necessary performance to compete in the rugged, lifestyle-oriented SUV segment.

JSW Motors intends to position this electric SUV as a direct competitor to established lifestyle off-roaders such as the Mahindra Thar Roxx and the Force Gurkha 5-door. By offering an electric powertrain with AWD capability, the company aims to carve out a distinct niche in the Indian market. Industry estimates currently place the expected ex-showroom price at approximately Rs 20 lakh. The vehicle is expected to be part of a broader portfolio of new energy vehicles (NEVs) that JSW Motors plans to introduce through its strategic partnership with Chery. While an official launch date remains unconfirmed, the SUV is expected to be locally assembled at the company's facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar to maintain competitive pricing.
