India's domestic passenger vehicle wholesales surged by approximately 21 percent year-on-year in September to reach 4.60 lakh units, driven by aggressive dealership stocking ahead of the peak festive season. Major manufacturers, including market leader Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and Mahindra, reported robust double-digit growth figures supported by stable macroeconomic factors and a favorable low base from the previous year.

According to The Economic Times (ETAuto), tata Motors reported that electric and CNG vehicles together accounted for 51 percent of its passenger vehicle sales in the period ending September 2026. According to VahanBazaar, passenger vehicle dealer inventory in India stood at approximately 30 to 40 days in September 2026 ahead of the festive rush.

The sharp expansion in dispatches reflects aggressive preparation across automotive original equipment manufacturers to capture consumer demand during the festive window spanning from Navratri to Diwali. Industry executives noted that sustained tailwinds from previous fiscal adjustments, stable repo rates, and positive consumer sentiment bolstered dealership orders across urban and rural markets.

Manufacturer Performance and Double-Digit Gains

Maruti Suzuki led the domestic volume expansion with dispatches climbing 37 percent to 181,838 units, compared to 132,820 units recorded in September 2025. The country's largest carmaker reported maintaining a retail order backlog of 2 lakh units alongside a lean network stock of 17 days. Maruti Suzuki Senior Officer Partho Banerjee pointed to lower borrowing costs and stable income tax parameters as key demand catalysts.

Tata Motors secured the second position with domestic wholesales of 68,810 units, marking a 15 percent increase over the 59,667 units dispatched during the corresponding month last year. Mahindra followed closely with 64,092 units, achieving a 14 percent year-on-year growth rate compared to 58,233 units previously. Hyundai Motor India reported a 10.9 percent rise in domestic dispatches to 57,166 units, while maintaining an optimistic outlook for sustained retail enthusiasm through the festive weeks.

According to EVreporter, for State-wise electric passenger car registrations, Telangana leads in relative EV penetration reaching 11.6 percent, followed by Chandigarh and Delhi. According to NDTV Auto, mahindra's high-demand SUV models command customer waiting periods of up to 6 months for select variants.

Divergent Trends Across Emerging and Legacy Portfolios

While major domestic players expanded their volumes comfortably, performance across the wider industry remained mixed. Several mid-sized importers and newer entrants registered aggressive gains from smaller volume bases. Kia recorded a 41 percent year-on-year increase with 32,017 units dispatched, while JSW MG Motor India grew 19 percent to 8,018 units. Nissan doubled its wholesale volume year-on-year, touching 3,300 units.

Conversely, select manufacturers encountered headwinds during the month. Toyota experienced a 7.6 percent decline in wholesale volume, while Honda and Renault registered contraction rates of 16 percent and 20.3 percent, respectively. Industry analysts observed that year-on-year comparisons were heavily influenced by the low base of September 2025, when supply chains experienced temporary disruptions ahead of regulatory retail adjustments.

Electric Vehicle Momentum in the Retail Segment

Parallel registration figures from the Vahan portal highlighted an equally sharp acceleration in India's electric passenger vehicle segment, which nearly doubled in September. Total electric car registrations reached 35,048 units, representing a 95.4 percent year-on-year expansion from 17,932 units in September 2025, alongside a 10.3 percent sequential rise from August.

Tata Motors maintained dominance in the electric category with 14,792 registrations and a 42.2 percent market share, while Mahindra captured 22.2 percent of the segment with 7,782 electric vehicle registrations. Newer market entrants, including VinFast, expanded rapidly to secure an 8.5 percent share with 2,964 registrations, illustrating broader consumer adoption across alternative powertrain segments ahead of the festive closure.
