India's electric vehicle (EV) retail market achieved a record-breaking performance in September 2026, with sales surging 74% year-on-year to 3,33,634 units. According to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), this milestone pushed overall EV penetration across all vehicle categories to approximately 13%, up from 10% in September 2025. The growth was primarily driven by robust demand in the electric two-wheeler and passenger vehicle segments, both of which recorded their highest-ever monthly retail figures.

Electric three-wheeler retail sales reached 86,024 units with 64.9% penetration, while electric commercial vehicle retail penetration rose to approximately 4% in September 2026.

In September 2025, electric two-wheeler penetration was 8.2% and electric passenger vehicle penetration was 5.7% nationwide, according to historical FADA benchmarks.

Electric passenger vehicle retail sales expanded 94.56% year-on-year and 17.63% month-on-month in September 2026, lifting segment penetration to 8.5%.

Market Drivers and Performance

FADA President Sai Giridhar attributed the record-breaking month to a combination of festive-season demand, improved running-cost economics, and a wider variety of available models. Sustained policy support, including the PM E-DRIVE initiative and various state-level schemes, has further accelerated adoption, positioning EVs as a primary choice for a growing demographic of Indian buyers. The broader automobile industry also saw its strongest September on record, with total retail sales reaching 25,36,920 units, a 31.82% increase compared to the same period last year.

Segment-Specific Growth

Electric two-wheelers led the mass-market expansion, reaching an all-time high of 2,07,314 units, an 88% increase year-on-year. This segment now accounts for more than one in nine two-wheelers sold in the country. Electric passenger vehicle sales also doubled compared to September 2025, reaching 36,108 units. While electric commercial vehicle sales experienced a slight month-on-month dip, the segment still grew by over 150% year-on-year, signaling deepening fleet electrification. Despite the record-breaking performance, FADA noted that passenger vehicle inventory at dealerships has risen to 43 to 45 days, exceeding the recommended 21-day level as dealers prepare for continued festive demand.

What a record sales month does not prove

A monthly registration record signals strong activity, but it does not reveal how profitable manufacturers are or whether the growth will persist. Readers should separate two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles because their pricing, incentives and charging needs differ sharply. Comparing September with both the previous month and the same month a year earlier helps distinguish seasonality from structural growth. The next test is whether dealer inventories, financing conditions and charging deployment can keep pace with registrations after the festival-driven buying period ends.
