India has the potential to slash its annual combined oil and battery import bill by up to USD 125 billion by 2050 through an accelerated transition toward electric vehicles across all road transport segments, according to a newly released research study. The comprehensive assessment highlights that financial savings achieved by curbing foreign petrol and diesel purchases significantly outweigh the capital outlays required for battery imports by an order of magnitude.
The findings were published on Wednesday in a study titled "India's EV transition: Impact of electric vehicle battery demand on import payments from 2024 to 2050" by the International Council on Clean Transportation, a nonprofit research organisation. Researchers evaluated battery demand trajectories across multiple vehicle classes, providing fresh economic data on how domestic electrification strategies influence national energy security and trade deficits over the coming decades.
Modeling Electric Vehicle Adoption Pathways and Import Reductions
The ICCT research models India's total battery demand from 2024 through 2050 across a broad spectrum of on-road vehicle segments. The analytical framework encompasses two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, buses, and heavy-duty trucks. To account for varying market speeds, the study tests three distinct adoption pathways: baseline, momentum, and ambitious scenarios.
According to the modeling data, cumulative battery demand across the country rises steeply following 2030 in all projected pathways. Under the baseline trajectory, total demand reaches approximately 340 GWh by 2050, whereas momentum and ambitious pathways drive that figure up to roughly 573 GWh. The study contrasts these demand curves against four distinct domestic manufacturing tiers to understand how local cell production alters the broader macroeconomic balance.
Economic Resilience and Crude Price Shock Mitigation
Industry analysts note that rapid vehicle electrification serves as an essential structural shield against international commodity fluctuations. Amit Bhatt, the India managing director for the ICCT, emphasized the broader macroeconomic defense mechanisms built into a swift transition.
"The faster India electrifies, the less exposed it is to global crude price shocks, and the stronger its case for 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat'," Amit Bhatt said in a statement. Bhatt further noted that while localizing battery production introduces additional industrial value, the sheer pace of on-road electrification provides the foundational layer of national economic protection.
Localisation Scenarios and Domestic Manufacturing Targets
The research framework evaluates four distinct localisation scenarios representing varying scales of domestic cell manufacturing capacity, aligned directly with India's announced industrial capacity targets. These range from a zero-localisation baseline to slow localisation, announced capacity, and high localisation tiers.
Co-author and ICCT researcher Namita Singh detailed the dual-layered savings potential inherent in combining vehicle electrification with domestic supply chains. "Every electric vehicle India puts on the road reduces its dependence on imported oil, whether the batteries are manufactured domestically or imported," Namita Singh stated. Singh added that accelerated adoption alone cuts road transport import bills by 61 percent, while pairing rapid vehicle conversion with robust domestic battery manufacturing elevates total savings to 82 percent.
Import Bill Projections and Long-Term Fiscal Impacts
The quantitative projections indicate that even if domestic supply chains rely heavily on imported cells, vehicle-related import expenditures drop substantially. Faster EV adoption reduces the combined road transport import bill by approximately 61 percent by 2050, compressing outlays from USD 153 billion down to USD 59 billion under specific baseline import assumptions.
When aggressive domestic cell manufacturing is successfully coupled with high EV adoption rates, the annual savings scale up to the maximum estimated figure of USD 125 billion. These fiscal retrenchments fundamentally alter India's long-term current account dynamics by replacing recurring fossil fuel outflows with localized, sustainable energy infrastructure investments.

The comprehensive projections underscore a profound structural shift for India's domestic automotive and energy sectors over the next quarter-century. As heavy commercial transport, buses, and passenger fleets progressively transition away from internal combustion engines, domestic supply chains must adapt to unprecedented gigawatt-hour demand scales.
