China's GAC Outlines French Expansion With 12 Models And Local Production Aims
Guangzhou Automobile Group is planning to establish local vehicle production capacity within Europe alongside an aggressive product rollout in France, according to disclosures from company executives. The Chinese automaker announced intentions to introduce 12 electric and hybrid models to the French market by the end of the decade as part of an accelerated European market entry strategy.
Other Chinese automakers have also pursued European production sites, with Chery Automobile commencing localized manufacturing in Spain and BYD prioritizing a plant in Hungary.
GAC currently produces its European vehicles at Magna Steyr's assembly plant in Graz, Austria. The European Union imposes a 20.7% countervailing duty on GAC electric vehicles as a cooperating producer, on top of the standard 10% MFN tariff, totaling 30.7%.
Speaking in Paris during the commercial introduction of the brand's initial two vehicles in the country, GAC France Deputy CEO Cedric Lacour detailed the company's retail footprint targets. The firm aims to establish 50 operational dealerships across France within the current year, scaling that retail network up to 200 retail locations by 2030.
Expanding European Footprint and Production Ambitions
The strategic push by Guangzhou Automobile Group involves evaluating manufacturing options to secure regional production capacity inside Europe. This industrial expansion aligns with broader efforts by Chinese automotive manufacturers to establish local assembly and supply chains to navigate evolving international trade frameworks and reduce logistics overhead.
The commercial roadmap centers on transitioning from initial market entry to full-scale operations within a compressed operational timeframe. Company leadership framed the French market rollout as a foundational step toward broader continental distribution for its electrified and hybrid vehicle lineup.
Retail Network Scalability and Launch Timeline
The scaling strategy relies heavily on rapidly expanding dealership infrastructure from the baseline of 50 outlets targeted for the current operating period. By quadrupling the retail network to 200 doors by 2030, GAC intends to support the simultaneous commercialization of its 12 planned electrified and hybrid offerings.
"Our goal is to take a brand from launch to scaling up in just four years," Cedric Lacour told Reuters at the launch event in Paris, highlighting the compressed timeline set for the brand's European establishment.
