German luxury manufacturer BMW has previewed the upcoming G50 generation of its 3 Series sedan, confirming that the internal combustion engine will remain part of the core lineup despite a parallel electric rollout. The initial teaser focuses on the upcoming M350 xDrive flagship, which is scheduled to replace the current M340i xDrive at the top of the standard range before the arrival of the full-fat M3.
Underpinning the new generation is a heavily revised chassis and a comprehensive suite of hardware updates. While the vehicle remains heavily camouflaged in initial press previews, engineering details released by the company indicate a strategic balance between maintaining traditional driving dynamics and integrating advanced powertrain assistance systems.
Powertrain Specifications and Mild Hybrid Integration
Beneath the bonnet of the upcoming M350 xDrive sits an updated turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine, which is widely understood to be an evolution of the current B58 powerplant. To assist with emissions standards and overall fuel economy, the engine is paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Power is distributed to all four wheels through an eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission.
BMW has confirmed that the M350 xDrive will generate 326kW of power and 580Nm of torque. This marks a substantial increase over the outgoing M340i xDrive, which produces 285kW and 500Nm. The performance figures bring the upcoming model close to the capability of the current full-fat M3, which outputs 353kW and 550Nm in rear-drive manual guise, or up to 390kW and 650Nm in its all-wheel-drive xDrive Competition configuration.
Acceleration Figures and New Drift Capabilities
The increased output translates into sharper acceleration, with the M350 xDrive capable of sprinting from 0-100km/h in 4.1 seconds. This improves upon the 4.3-second claim associated with the outgoing M340i model. Beyond straight-line performance, the vehicle introduces dynamic handling technology previously reserved for the brand's dedicated high-performance division.
The upcoming flagship will become the first non-M BMW vehicle to feature the brand's 'Drift Moment' system. Activating this mode directs all available engine power exclusively to the rear wheels to facilitate controlled sliding. BMW has clarified that the feature will not be active at initial launch, but will instead be rolled out over the course of 2027 via a Remote Software Upgrade for both new factory deliveries and customer vehicles already on the road.

While official specifications for the entire lineup are being gradually disclosed, leaked prospective details compiled from industry insiders outline notable physical growth for the G50 generation. The sedan is projected to measure 4765mm in length, 1850mm in width excluding mirrors, and 1455mm in height, riding on a 2860mm wheelbase.
These dimensions represent a measurable expansion compared to the current iteration, making the new 3 Series 52mm longer, 23mm wider, and 15mm taller, with an additional 9mm of distance between the axles. Along with this physical growth, the M350 xDrive is expected to carry a weight penalty of approximately 100kg, bringing its projected kerb weight to 1935kg as global markets prepare for variants ranging from the 318 up to the flagship six-cylinder.

Addressing the mechanical design of the new vehicle, BMW's senior vice president of driving experience development, Dr Mihiar Ayoubi, emphasized the continuity of the brand's core engineering goals. The integration of the intelligent driving stack is designed to harmonize steering feedback and chassis responsiveness across varied driving conditions.
Production of the new BMW 3 Series generation is scheduled to commence before the end of the year, following a formal global unveiling expected in the coming months. Market rollouts and regional delivery timelines will be finalized following the official production launch.
