BMW India has officially launched the i5 Long Wheelbase (LWB) electric sedan in the country, with introductory prices starting at Rs 79.6 lakh (ex-showroom). Serving as the German manufacturer's first locally produced electric sedan, the vehicle is being assembled at BMW Group's manufacturing facility located in Chennai. Bookings for the new electric luxury sedan opened in August, and while the company has structured the lineup around a single eDrive35L M Sport variant, it also introduced a limited First Edition at the exact same introductory price point. All 99 units allocated for the First Edition launch batch have already been completely booked out by buyers prior to the formal market introduction.
The i5 LWB represents a strategic pricing and production pivot for the luxury marque in the Indian market, arriving significantly below the imported standard-wheelbase i5 M60 xDrive, which commands an ex-showroom price of approximately Rs 1.2 crore as a completely built-up unit (CBU). By handling local assembly in Chennai, BMW has managed to undercut its imported stablemate by roughly Rs 40.4 lakh while targeting buyers seeking chauffeur-driven rear-seat comfort combined with battery-electric propulsion. Its primary competitor in the domestic market is identified as the Lexus ES 500e, which retails at Rs 91.2 lakh (ex-showroom) and features a smaller 74.68kWh battery pack alongside a shorter claimed driving range.

Underneath the exterior sheet metal, the BMW i5 eDrive35L utilizes a single electric motor mounted directly to the rear axle, establishing a rear-wheel-drive layout. Customer deliveries for the BMW i5 LWB have commenced immediately following the market launch. The connectivity suite leverages the MyBMW App and BMW Digital Key Plus, turning a compatible smartphone or smartwatch into a secure digital key that can be shared with up to 18 distinct users while storing personalized vehicle configurations for speed, power output, and audio profiles.
The vehicle also features an integrated interior camera capable of capturing photos and recording videos with sound, accessible remotely through the mobile application.
