Bentley Unveils First Electric SUV Named Torcal With 888 PS

British luxury carmaker Bentley has officially introduced the Torcal, marking its entry into the fully electric vehicle segment with an ultra-luxury SUV that delivers up to 888 PS and a WLTP-claimed range exceeding 600 kilometres. Positioned globally as Bentley's fourth model line, the Torcal serves as an important test of ultra-high-end buyer sentiment at a time when delivery figures have softened and several high-end competitors have adjusted their own electrification timelines. Volkswagen-owned Bentley reported 4,200 vehicle deliveries in the first half of the year, representing a 13.6 percent decline compared to the previous period.

The launch coincides with a completed £350 million (approximately €408 million) capital investment into the manufacturer's historic production facility in Crewe, England, which included constructing a specialized assembly line for the new battery-powered vehicle. UK Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds stated that the factory investment supports 4,000 existing positions on-site. The Torcal is reported to start around £173,300 (approximately €202,000) in the United Kingdom, placing its base pricing slightly below Bentley's existing combustion and hybrid offerings such as the Bentayga, Flying Spur, and Continental GT.

Underneath its bespoke exterior, the Torcal utilizes the Volkswagen Group Premium Platform Electric architecture, sharing technical underpinnings with sibling models like the electric Porsche Cayenne. The vehicle is built on an 800-volt electrical system and features a usable 113 kWh battery pack paired with a dual-motor configuration across its variants. The standard model generates 888 PS and 1,350 Nm of torque, enabling an acceleration sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds, while the Torcal S variant produces 821 PS and 1,194 Nm with a zero-to-100 km/h time of 3.4 seconds.

Charging infrastructure is supported by a 400 kW DC fast-charging capability, which Bentley states can replenish the battery from 10 percent to 80 percent in approximately 16 minutes under optimal conditions. Dynamic capabilities are enhanced by a fully active suspension system capable of real-time adjustments to maintain vehicle stability across varying road conditions, alongside standard rear-wheel steering to improve maneuverability at low and high speeds.

Externally, the Torcal departs from traditional sleek silhouettes by adopting a squared-off, boxy profile characterized by a hunkered-down stance, an illuminated chrome grille, slim LED headlamps, and up to 22-inch wheel options. It also represents the first production vehicle to display Bentley's revised corporate logo, which was revealed the previous year. The absence of traditional roof rails underscores the manufacturer's emphasis on aerodynamic sportiness rather than rugged utility.

Inside the cabin, the layout combines modern digitization with traditional artisanal materials, featuring a curved central OLED touchscreen infotainment system flanked by knurled physical dials. The interior incorporates natural wood veneers and Merino Wool upholstery alongside 16-way adjustable heated, ventilated, and massaging front seats. Cabin audio is delivered via a 1,780-watt, 28-speaker Naim surround sound system, complemented by powered doors and a switchable-glass panoramic sunroof.

Bentley has targeted the Torcal introduction in India for the second year following its global debut, with estimated showroom pricing projected around Rs 4.5 crore to Rs 5 crore before optional customization. Industry analysts note that unlike certain imported combustion vehicles eligible for specific trade framework concessions, the Torcal may face high import duties without regional tariff advantages. Furthermore, while the vehicle supports ultra-rapid 400 kW charging, public charging networks in developing markets currently offer very limited infrastructure capable of matching those speeds.

To bridge the sensory gap left by the removal of internal combustion engines, Bentley engineered a custom acoustic profile inspired by its traditional V8 powerplants. The vehicle is equipped with a 25-radar advanced driver assistance suite. While Bentley originally targeted a fully electric lineup by 2030, shifting market conditions prompted the company to extend its transition timeline, making the Torcal a crucial bridge model to evaluate how traditional luxury buyers embrace battery propulsion.
