Wayanad to Install Advanced X-Band Weather Radar

The Union government has approved the installation of an advanced X-band weather radar in Kerala’s Wayanad district. This decision follows the devastating landslides two years ago which claimed 298 lives and exposed critical gaps in local disaster preparedness. The radar system aims to provide high-resolution weather data to improve meteorological tracking and early warning capabilities in the hilly, monsoon-prone terrain.

Regional vulnerability to extreme weather events has made Wayanad a high-priority zone for climate monitoring. The implementation of this X-band technology is designed to detect localized heavy rainfall with greater precision than existing regional networks. Authorities intend to reduce the lag time between weather anomalies and public alerts to ensure that residents in fragile zones have sufficient time to evacuate during climate emergencies.
