Kerala Vigilance Clears CM V.D. Satheesan in Punarjani Case

The Kerala Vigilance Bureau has officially dropped its investigation into corruption allegations against Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan related to the 2018 Punarjani foreign fund case. The bureau's report concluded that the Chief Minister had no personal role in the alleged financial irregularities or the solicitation of foreign funds for his constituency. This decision provides a major legal reprieve for the UDF-led government, which has consistently maintained that the charges were baseless and lacked any credible evidence of criminal intent.

The case originated from allegations that foreign funds were collected in violation of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) for the Punarjani housing project in Satheesan's Paravur constituency following the 2018 floods. Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala stated that the probe initiated by the previous LDF administration was purely politically motivated. The investigation sought to determine if proper government clearances were obtained for these international donations, but the latest findings suggest that no procedural laws were bypassed by the Chief Minister himself during the project's execution.

The closure of this case is expected to strengthen Satheesan's political standing within the state as his administration prepares for upcoming legislative challenges. Opposition leaders from the LDF have criticized the Vigilance Bureau's move, suggesting it reflects a bias within the current government structure.
