US Condemns China's 'Destabilizing' Claims Over Scarborough Shoal

The United States on Saturday accused China of employing 'dubious' pretexts to assert its territorial claims in the South China Sea. Specifically, Washington highlighted Beijing’s enforcement of a nature reserve at Scarborough Shoal as a tactic to bar Filipino fishermen from accessing the contested waters. This development is seen by US officials as a 'destabilizing' move that heightens regional tensions and challenges the existing international maritime order. The Shoal has long been a flashpoint for conflict between Manila and Beijing, with the US providing significant diplomatic and military support to its Philippine ally.

According to the US statement, China’s unilateral declaration of a nature reserve is a calculated move to establish administrative control over a region that was declared part of the Philippines' Exclusive Economic Zone by an international tribunal in 2016.
