Zelensky Replaces Ukraine Army Chief Syrskyi After Mass Protests

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed military commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi on Tuesday, appointing the popular and battle-hardened Mykhailo Drapatyi to lead the armed forces. The high-profile replacement followed six days of intense street protests in Kyiv. The demonstrations erupted after the removal of innovative Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov last week. Zelensky framed the change as a necessary reset to resolve internal friction and improve front-line management against Russian forces.

The leadership crisis escalated from deep-seated philosophical disagreements between the 60-year-old Syrskyi and the 35-year-old Fedorov. Fedorov advocated for rapid technological integration, such as drone innovation and gamification of warfare, but accused Syrskyi of resisting modernization. Following Fedorov's ouster, thousands of citizens took to the streets, demanding Syrskyi’s resignation. Drapatyi, an innovative 43-year-old commander and close ally of Fedorov, previously led successful defensive operations in Kryvyi Rih, Kherson, and Kharkiv.

Zelensky has offered Fedorov a new government role managing the technology sector, though his acceptance remains unconfirmed. Acting Defence Minister Yevhenii Khmara and Drapatyi must now formulate a new military strategy focusing on corps reform and drone supplies. While the shift has defused immediate political tensions, civil casualties in Ukraine have surged by 37 percent in the first half of 2026 compared to last year.
