UGC NET 2026 Results Delayed: NTA Cites Massive 87-Subject Scale

Thousands of candidates who appeared for the UGC NET June 2026 session are facing significant uncertainty as the National Testing Agency (NTA) continues to delay the release of final answer keys and results. This delay, now exceeding a month, has effectively stalled the academic progression of PhD aspirants across India. Without verified scores, students are unable to participate in the ongoing admission cycles at major central and state universities. The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) has formally written to the NTA and the University Grants Commission (UGC), demanding an immediate end to this administrative stalemate which they claim is jeopardising the future of research scholars.

Responding to the growing criticism, the NTA has described the current evaluation process as a "huge exercise" involving 87 different subjects. The agency clarified that the process of addressing thousands of student challenges to the provisional answer keys requires meticulous verification by subject experts to ensure absolute accuracy. Unlike single-subject professional entrance exams, the UGC NET's multidisciplinary nature necessitates a longer turnaround time for the final marking scheme. Agency officials have indicated that the final answer keys are in the advanced stages of preparation but have refrained from providing a specific date for the formal declaration of results.

The prolonged delay is triggering a visible shift in the higher education landscape, as desperate PhD candidates begin exploring admissions in private colleges. Many students fear that missing the current academic year's deadlines at public universities will lead to a significant career setback. Educational experts warn that this delay not only affects individual students but also impacts the faculty recruitment process in Indian higher education, where a NET qualification is a mandatory requirement.
