Uganda Government Commits to Protecting Environmental Defenders

The Government of Uganda has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting environmental human rights defenders and promoting inclusive environmental governance. The policy focus particularly targets indigenous and minority communities facing growing threats.

Hajara Nalubega, the Principal Culture Officer at the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, stated that the government recognizes the vital role played by defenders. Officials emphasized the urgent need to address climate change and natural resource exploitation impacts on vulnerable populations.

Authorities intend to collaborate with civil society organizations to establish safer frameworks for activists. The initiative aims to balance national development goals with human rights protections.
