Tumakuru-Shivamogga NH-69 Four-Laning Project Nears 2027 Completion

The four-laning of National Highway 69, connecting Tumakuru and Shivamogga in Karnataka, is nearing its final stages of completion. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari provided this update in a written response to a question raised by Shivamogga MP B.Y. Raghavendra in the Lok Sabha. The project is a vital link for the state's internal connectivity, aimed at reducing travel time between the industrial hub of Tumakuru and the gateway to the Malnad region, Shivamogga. Officials have set a deadline of March 2027 for the delivery of the final package.

The expansion project has been executed across four distinct packages under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM). This financial structure combines government grants with private developer investment, ensuring a steady flow of funds and timely implementation. Each package addresses specific stretches of the highway to manage technical challenges and geographical constraints effectively. By breaking the project into smaller segments, the Ministry has been able to maintain a consistent pace of work, even as land acquisition and environmental clearances were finalized in various phases over the last few years.

Once fully operational in early 2027, the four-lane highway will significantly improve transit efficiency for both passenger and commercial vehicles. For commuters, the upgraded road surface and increased lane capacity will enhance safety and reduce the current traffic bottlenecks. On a broader scale, the project is expected to boost economic activity in central Karnataka by facilitating faster movement of agricultural produce and industrial goods. The completion of NH-69 aligns with the National Infrastructure Pipeline's goal of creating a robust multi-modal transport network across the country to support long-term economic growth.
