TRAI Proposes Strict Telecom Quality Rules and Anti-Spam Oversight

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has initiated major regulatory updates to enhance the country's telecom sector service standards. On August 5, 2026, TRAI released a consultation paper proposing comprehensive amendments to its Standards of Quality of Service of Access and Broadband Service Regulations, 2024. Industry stakeholders have been invited to submit their feedback by August 26 as TRAI seeks to enforce rigorous performance metrics for wireline and wireless operators.

Additionally, on August 9, TRAI released the Draft Telecom Consumer Protection Amendment Regulation, 2026. This draft mandate requires that for every unique validity period offered under Special Tariff Vouchers that include Voice, SMS, and Data, telecom service providers must also offer a corresponding Special Tariff Voucher exclusively for Voice and SMS. Public comments on this draft regulation remain open until August 28.

In a parallel administrative overhaul, the Department of Telecommunications introduced the Telecommunications Rules, 2026, replacing legacy licensing frameworks with a streamlined statutory authorization mechanism for ISPs and virtual network operators. Furthermore, TRAI's draft anti-spam regulations seek to bring caller-identification apps like Truecaller within its formal regulatory architecture to strengthen security.
