Tiruchi Airport Expansion: MP Urges Centre to Fast-Track Runway Work

Tiruchirapalli Member of Parliament Durai Vaiko has formally approached the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation to demand the immediate acceleration of runway expansion work at the city's international airport. The MP emphasized that the project is critical for the region's connectivity and economic growth. He specifically urged the Civil Aviation Minister to execute the expansion plan expeditiously to accommodate larger aircraft and increase international flight frequency, which has been a long-standing demand from local trade and tourism bodies.

The expansion project faces significant hurdles regarding land acquisition, particularly involving two specific parcels where local residents have expressed strong opposition. MP Vaiko has appealed to the Ministry to consider exempting these residential areas from the acquisition process to prevent further delays and social unrest. This balance between infrastructure needs and local welfare remains a delicate issue for the authorities. The current runway length restricts the operation of wide-bodied aircraft, limiting Tiruchi's potential as a major South Indian aviation hub.

The successful completion of this expansion is expected to transform Tiruchirapalli into a more prominent gateway for the Tamil diaspora and international cargo. By lengthening the runway, the airport can support direct long-haul flights to destinations in Europe and the Middle East. For India, this move aligns with the broader goal of decentralizing international air traffic from metros to Tier-2 cities.
