Telangana Launches ₹1.5 Lakh Subsidy For Electric Autorickshaw Conversion

The Telangana government has finalized a comprehensive electric conversion scheme aimed at decarbonizing the state's autorickshaw fleet. Under this new initiative, auto drivers and owners can access financial assistance of up to ₹1.50 lakh. This monetary support is designed to facilitate either the purchase of brand-new electric autorickshaws or the conversion of existing internal combustion engine vehicles. The scheme represents one of the most aggressive state-level subsidies in India for the three-wheeler segment, targeting a rapid shift away from fossil fuels in urban transportation hubs like Hyderabad.

To ensure safety and performance, the government has mandated that all retrofitting must use AIS-123-approved electric kits. These kits must be installed exclusively by empanelled vendors authorized by the state transport department. This technical safeguard ensures that converted vehicles meet national safety standards for battery placement, motor efficiency, and thermal management. Auto unions have broadly welcomed the move, noting that the high subsidy amount makes the transition financially viable for low-income drivers who were previously deterred by the high upfront costs of electric vehicle technology.

The rollout of this scheme is expected to significantly reduce tailpipe emissions and noise pollution in Telangana's major cities. Beyond the environmental benefits, the government highlights the lower operational costs for drivers, as electricity is substantially cheaper than petrol or CNG. The state plans to establish a network of empanelled service centers to support the maintenance of these newly converted electric fleets. This move aligns with India's broader national goals for electric mobility and could serve as a model for other states looking to transition their para-transit systems to sustainable energy sources.
