Telangana Publishes 2026 Draft Electoral Rolls Amid Voter Exclusion Dispute

The Chief Electoral Officer of Telangana has officially released the draft electoral rolls for 2026, identifying approximately 94 lakh electors across the state. This publication follows a comprehensive enumeration phase aimed at updating voter records. However, the process has sparked immediate controversy as early reports indicate that nearly 73 lakh potential voters were excluded from the primary list. Election authorities have confirmed that approximately 93 lakh individuals will receive formal notices regarding their status as the state moves into the next phase of verification.

The current update is part of the Special Institutional Revision (SIR) 2026, designed to streamline voter registration in complex urban and institutional settings. Activists and civil society groups have expressed concerns regarding the speed of the enumeration phase, which they claim has left many citizens vulnerable to administrative errors. In response, several groups have formally requested a 15-day extension for the public to file claims and objections. They argue that the 119 Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) currently managing the process require more time to address the massive scale of discrepancies and ensure no legitimate citizen is disenfranchised.

Parallel to the electoral updates, the Telangana government is preparing a strong pitch for its developmental demands at the upcoming Southern Zonal Council (SZC) meeting. A high-level team, led by the Deputy Chief Minister and senior officials, will advocate for the allocation of coal blocks to the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL). This move is critical for the state's energy security and industrial growth. The delegation also intends to raise concerns about interstate water sharing and infrastructure funding, seeking central intervention to resolve long-standing disputes with neighboring states and ensure equitable resource distribution.
