Tamil Nadu Leads India in Female Workforce Participation

Tamil Nadu continues to outperform other Indian states in female labour force participation, particularly in the electronics and computer manufacturing sectors. Data from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) highlights two Tamil Nadu cities, Coimbatore and Madurai, as leaders with female participation rates of 41.3% and 37% respectively, significantly higher than the 27.7% national urban average. The state remains a dominant hub, accounting for roughly 40% of the total women employed in India's electronics and optical manufacturing factories as of 2023-24.

The state's success is largely attributed to its proactive approach toward providing secure housing for female workers. By integrating dormitory-style industrial housing through the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) and smaller, high-quality urban hostels known as Thozhi hostels, Tamil Nadu has effectively mitigated the primary barrier to female employment. Think-tanks have identified this housing model as a vital form of economic infrastructure that significantly aids in the attraction and retention of migrant labour, distinguishing the state from regional peers like Kerala, where manufacturing participation has seen a slight decline.

Tamil Nadu's industrial landscape continues to expand with massive investments, including recent agreements with Vikram Solar for battery storage facilities and potential expansions by multinational companies. While wage growth in the state has outpaced the national average at 83% over the last decade, average wages remain lower than those in top-tier cities like Prayagraj. Nevertheless, the state's focus on creating integrated, women-led industrial ecosystems signals a long-term commitment to maintaining its position as the country's leading manufacturing hub for consumer electronics.
