Tahir Hussain Sentenced To Life For Ankit Sharma Murder

Former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Tahir Hussain has been sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in the 2020 murder of Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer Ankit Sharma. Additional Sessions Judge Praveen Singh delivered the verdict in a Delhi court on Friday, also sentencing four other individuals convicted in the same case. The prosecution had initially sought the death penalty, arguing the severity of the incident.

The case revolves around the events of February 25, 2020, during the Delhi riots in the Khajuri Khas and Chand Bagh Pulia areas. Evidence presented during the trial indicated that the victim was targeted by a mob while attempting to mediate a clash between two groups. He was allegedly kidnapped, assaulted, and stabbed multiple times before his body was discovered in a local drain the following day. The court characterized the act as the work of a murderous mob baying for blood.

The conviction has prompted intense political debate, with opposition leaders demanding accountability from AAP leadership regarding Hussain's prior association with the party. While AAP maintains that he was expelled following his arrest, critics claim the party must address concerns about his alleged role in inciting violence. The verdict provides a measure of closure for the victim’s family, while highlighting the legal repercussions of the 2020 communal violence that claimed numerous lives and caused widespread property damage in northeast Delhi.
