Supreme Court Rejects Odisha’s Plea to Ban 'Mahaprabhu Jagannath' Animation

The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday dismissed a petition by the Odisha government seeking a ban on the release of the animated film 'Mahaprabhu Jagannath'. The bench refused to stay the film's screening, questioning whether the judiciary should dictate that no films can be made on Hindu deities. The court emphasized that it cannot sit in judgment over art and that the country must foster a climate of creativity. This ruling clears the path for the animated feature, which had been caught in a legal battle over its portrayal of the revered deity of Puri.

During the hearing, the apex court observed that animation serves a significant educational and entertainment purpose, particularly for children. The justices remarked that "nobody is now reading books" and that artistic expressions like animation should not be obstructed by legal challenges. The Odisha government had raised concerns that the animated portrayal might hurt religious sentiments or diminish the devotion associated with Lord Jagannath, a claim the court found unpersuasive.
