The bench halted a complaint seeking a CBI and ED probe into alleged disproportionate assets, which had been filed by petitioner Vignesh Shishir. Simultaneously, the top court quashed a separate criminal defamation complaint and summons against Gandhi regarding remarks made about V.D. Savarkar. This dual relief effectively pauses two major legal challenges facing the Leader of Opposition in the national capital.

The proceedings in the Savarkar case were quashed after the Uttar Pradesh government officially refused to grant sanction for prosecution. The Allahabad High Court had previously entertained the assets complaint, prompting Gandhi to approach the apex court for protection against what his legal team termed as repetitive and politically motivated litigation. The court noted that without the requisite government sanction, the hate speech case regarding historical figures could not proceed under current Indian penal statutes.
