Supreme Court Refuses Trinamool Relief Over Frozen ₹440 Crore Accounts

The Supreme Court of India refused to interfere with a Calcutta High Court order that imposed strict restrictions on the operation of bank accounts belonging to the Trinamool Congress. A bench led by senior justices declined to grant interim relief to the Mamata Banerjee-led party, which had sought the release of approximately ₹440 crore. These funds were previously frozen by the Enforcement Directorate during an ongoing investigation into the party's financial transactions. The court noted that the party already has limited access to specific operational funds for daily administrative requirements as per existing submissions.

The legal challenge originated from an interim order by the Calcutta High Court that curtailed the party's ability to utilize its primary bank accounts. The Enforcement Directorate had moved to freeze these assets citing concerns over the source and utilization of the funds. While the Trinamool Congress argued that the freeze hampered its legitimate political activities and administrative functions, the High Court prioritized the integrity of the financial investigation. The Supreme Court's refusal to intervene essentially maintains the status quo, forcing the party to operate within the narrow financial limits set by the lower court.

This decision places significant financial pressure on the Trinamool Congress as it manages its organizational expenses across West Bengal and other regions. Additional Solicitor General S.V. Raju, appearing for the Enforcement Directorate, maintained that the party has not been completely stripped of funds but must comply with the established legal restrictions. The ruling is expected to impact the party's mobilization efforts and campaign planning for upcoming local and state-level engagements. Legal experts suggest the party will now have to wait for the final disposal of the case in the High Court to regain full control over its frozen assets.
