States Crack Down On Analogue Paneer Sale And Production

Several Indian states, including Madhya Pradesh, have moved to ban the production and sale of analogue paneer following health concerns and public outcry. This synthetic dairy product, often manufactured using vegetable oils and protein additives, is frequently sold as an alternative to natural paneer, misleading consumers about its nutritional content. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to state governments and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) seeking clarity on the regulation of such substitutes. The primary concern is that analogue products lack the essential nutrients found in natural milk-based paneer while being marketed in ways that blur the lines between dairy and non-dairy options. Governments are increasingly looking to promote natural paneer production as a way to support local dairy farmers and ensure public health safety standards are maintained.

As states adopt stricter measures, manufacturers of synthetic food products face greater regulatory scrutiny, with many expected to exit the market or face severe labeling restrictions. The ongoing crackdown aims to protect the integrity of the dairy industry and prevent the consumption of potentially unhealthy food substitutes.
