Sports Ministry Suspends Table Tennis Federation Over Governance Issues

The Union Sports Ministry on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, suspended its official recognition of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI). The decision follows a detailed review of the federation's administrative practices, which revealed significant "governance deficiencies" and failures to adhere to the National Sports Development Code. This suspension effectively strips the TTFI of its power to manage the sport, manage government funding, or select players for international events representing the nation under official federation banners.

This move comes after multiple reports of mismanagement within the federation's executive body. The Ministry highlighted that the federation failed to address long-standing issues regarding transparency, election protocols, and the welfare of athletes. Previous interventions by the Delhi High Court had already pointed toward systemic flaws in the TTFI's structure. By suspending the recognition, the government aims to force a complete overhaul of the leadership to ensure that the administration of table tennis in India meets global standards and domestic legal requirements.

To ensure that the athletes do not suffer due to the administrative vacuum, the Sports Ministry has directed the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to form an ad-hoc committee. This committee will be responsible for managing the day-to-day affairs of the sport, including the organisation of national championships and the selection of teams for upcoming international tournaments. For Indian paddlers, this development brings a mix of uncertainty regarding future camps and hope for a more transparent selection process that prioritises performance over administrative favouritism.
