Delhi High Court Seeks Medical Reports For Sonam Wangchuk

The Delhi High Court has directed the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and relevant medical authorities to present comprehensive health reports for social activist Sonam Wangchuk. His wife, Gitanjali Angmo, filed an appeal challenging a lower court's decision that denied permission to transfer Wangchuk to a private hospital of his choosing. The court has scheduled a follow-up hearing for July 21 at 12:30 PM to further evaluate the medical findings.

The bench, presided by the court, emphasized the need for transparency in assessing Wangchuk's health. It mandated that all pathological reports—including those from Safdarjung Hospital, AIIMS, and private laboratories—be filed via affidavit. The court also ordered the presence of the AIIMS emergency medicine director and the appellant's consulting doctor during the next proceedings to assist in the judicial assessment.

The ongoing legal struggle highlights tensions regarding medical autonomy and state custody protocols. While the court has asked that no forceful interventions occur before the next hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta raised concerns regarding accountability should complications arise.
