Sonam Wangchuk Protest Standoff Intensifies In Delhi Over Ladakh Rights

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk is leading a protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, demanding statehood for Ladakh and the implementation of constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule. The movement, organized by the Climate and Jobs Parliament (CJP), highlights deep-seated frustration regarding the governance of the region since it became a Union Territory in 2019. The protest involves demands for greater regional autonomy, education reform, and transparency in government recruitment. Tensions escalated recently as demonstrators attempted to march toward the Parliament building, leading to physical clashes with police and the detention of several key organizers.

Protesters argue that the current administrative framework lacks the democratic accountability required to protect Ladakh's high-altitude glacial ecology and cultural identity. Activists claim that development projects managed by the central government threaten the fragile environment. The agitation has grown significantly, spreading to cities like Bhubaneswar and signaling broad public dissatisfaction regarding youth employment and administrative accountability. The Delhi High Court has stepped into the crisis, ordering comprehensive medical evaluations for Sonam Wangchuk, who is currently on an indefinite hunger strike. A follow-up hearing is set for July 21 to decide on a request to transfer the activist to a private hospital. The court has strictly prohibited any forced medical interventions until the hearing concludes. As the demonstration persists, the government faces mounting pressure to initiate a formal dialogue regarding Sixth Schedule status to address the protesters' constitutional demands and prevent further unrest in the capital.
