Skyroot Launches Vikram-1, India's First Private Orbital Rocket

Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace has successfully launched its Vikram-1 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, marking a historic milestone as India's first privately developed orbital-class vehicle. Named 'Aagaman', the mission signifies India’s formal entry into the elite group of nations possessing private orbital launch capabilities. The 24-meter-tall rocket successfully ascended after a brief, planned hold during the automatic launch sequence, validating the performance of its multi-stage propulsion systems and in-house developed technologies in orbit.

Vikram-1 stands out for its all-carbon composite structure, which enhances structural strength while reducing mass. Skyroot has utilized additive manufacturing to produce its metallic 3D-printed liquid rocket engines, simplifying complex systems by replacing hundreds of components with single-piece units. The maiden mission served as a technical demonstration, carrying payloads including a micro-art project, lab-grown diamonds, and a symbolic postcard from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The vehicle's orbital adjustment module is designed to place satellites precisely into a 450 km Low Earth Orbit.

The launch represents the culmination of years of effort by the company’s founders, former ISRO scientists who set out to make space access affordable. This mission follows the successful suborbital flight of the Vikram-S rocket in 2022, demonstrating a clear trajectory of growth for the private space sector in India. Government leaders, including the Prime Minister and the Union Minister for Space, have lauded the achievement, emphasizing that the liberalization of the space sector has opened new frontiers for national innovation and established a regular cadence for future private satellite launches.
