Skoda-VW and JSW Group Close to Finalising Joint Venture

Skoda Auto Volkswagen India is in the final stages of talks with the domestic conglomerate JSW Group to establish a strategic manufacturing joint venture. Skoda's global CEO Klaus Zellmer confirmed the development during the Slavia launch in Mumbai on Tuesday. Zellmer stated that the company expects to secure its domestic partner by the end of 2026. He expressed confidence that a local partner with strong roots will significantly boost their growth momentum in the competitive Indian automotive market. The company aims to leverage local expertise to capture a larger share of the fast-growing Indian passenger vehicle market.

The upcoming alliance follows reports that the two companies are close to signing a non-binding memorandum of understanding within the next two months. Skoda Auto Volkswagen manages the local operations of multiple European brands in the country. Partnering with JSW Group provides the German automaker with crucial local manufacturing strength and regulatory navigation. This collaboration reflects a broader industry trend where foreign automotive giants seek powerful domestic allies to scale operations efficiently.

The finalised partnership will pave the way for accelerated vehicle development and potential electric vehicle manufacturing in India. Industry analysts anticipate that the joint venture will alter the pricing dynamics and product offerings in the mid-size sedan and SUV segments. Both companies are expected to finalise the formal framework agreement following the initial memorandum of understanding.
