Shehzad Poonawalla Resigns From BJP Citing Financial Burdens

Shehzad Poonawalla, one of the BJP's most visible and articulate national spokespersons, resigned from all party posts and primary membership on Monday. In a candid interview following his exit, Poonawalla cited pressing financial and personal circumstances as the primary drivers for his decision. He explained that his full-time commitment to politics for the past several years had become financially unsustainable. Poonawalla submitted his formal resignation to party president Nitin Nabin after a period of contemplation. While he first expressed a desire to step down in July, the party initially requested him to reconsider before accepting his final decision this week.

Poonawalla highlighted the economic challenges faced by political workers who do not come from established political families or 'legacies.' He used the phrase 'neither leta nor beta' to emphasize that he did not receive a salary from the party nor did he have inherited wealth. 'My landlord is not going to give me free rent because I am from the BJP,' he remarked, shedding light on the financial burdens of maintaining a public-facing role. He clarified that most political parties do not pay their spokespersons, making it difficult for those without outside income to sustain a 365-day-a-year job. His transition marks a rare public admission of the economic pressures within Indian political structures.

Despite leaving the organizational framework of the BJP, Poonawalla affirmed his continued support for the vision of Prime Minister Modi and the party's core ideology. He stated that he is leaving the 'Vyavastha' (organization) but not the 'Vyakti' (people) or 'Vichar' (thought). Poonawalla intends to move into the private sector to secure his financial future while remaining available to support the party in non-official capacities. His exit comes shortly after the BJP announced a new organizational team, though he denied that any disappointment over appointments influenced his move. His departure leaves a significant gap in the BJP's media representation team.
