Supreme Court Slams 'Cheap Publicity' Plea Against Justice Varma

The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition seeking a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe and the registration of an FIR against former High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma. The plea, filed by petitioner Ghanshyam Upadhyay, alleged involvement in a row concerning unaccounted cash. A Bench comprising Justice P.S. Narasimha observed that the petition lacked substantial merit and was primarily aimed at gaining attention. The court refused to entertain the request for a criminal investigation, maintaining that the allegations did not warrant the extraordinary measure of a court-monitored probe into a member of the judiciary.

During the hearing, the court expressed strong disapproval of the petitioner's motives, with Justice Narasimha orally remarking that the filing was a shot at "cheap publicity." The allegations centered on a controversy involving claims of unaccounted financial transactions.
