Russia Accelerates MC-21 Jet Production Amid Sanctions

Russia has successfully completed the maiden flight of its first production model of the MC-21 commercial jet. This milestone marks a significant step in the nation's efforts to modernise its civil aviation fleet while contending with severe Western sanctions that have hampered access to international aerospace technology. The government has formalised substantial funding increases for the project to ensure that domestic manufacturing can replace reliance on foreign-sourced aircraft components, which were largely sourced from Western suppliers before 2022.

The move to ramp up production of the MC-21 and the Il-114-300 aircraft types is central to Moscow's strategy of achieving complete aviation sovereignty. By injecting 250 billion rubles into the development and serial production of these platforms, the Kremlin aims to stabilise its domestic airline industry. The transition is forced by the exit of major manufacturers like Boeing and Airbus, which previously dominated the Russian aviation market. Experts observe that while the technical feasibility is confirmed, the scalability of this domestic supply chain remains a test of the country's industrial resilience.

The push for independent aircraft production reflects a long-term shift in the global aviation sector as nations seek to mitigate the impact of geopolitical sanctions. For India, which maintains a robust aviation sector and has a history of technical cooperation with Russia, these developments are significant.
