Rishikanta Singh Sets Games Record with Silver at CWG 2026

Chanambam Rishikanta Singh delivered a historic performance on Day 4 of the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, clinching a silver medal in the men's 60kg weightlifting category. Singh set a new Commonwealth Games record in the snatch discipline by successfully lifting 121kg on his third attempt. He finished with a combined total of 264kg, comprising his record snatch and a 143kg clean and jerk. This achievement marks India's first weightlifting medal of the current edition and the country's second medal overall, following a bronze in para powerlifting earlier in the competition.

The battle for gold was a closely contested affair between Singh and Malaysia's Mohamad Aniq Bin Kasdan. While both athletes matched the 121kg snatch record, Kasdan pulled ahead in the clean and jerk round. The Malaysian lifter set a new Games record by successfully hoisting 152kg, bringing his total to 273kg to secure the top spot on the podium. Kenya's Joshua Amunga Mboya took the bronze with a total of 260kg. Singh attempted to challenge for the gold by lifting 151kg in his final clean and jerk attempt, but he was unable to complete the lift, settling for a commendable second place.

Beyond the weightlifting arena, India experienced mixed results across other disciplines on Sunday. In lawn bowls, the veteran pair of Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh suffered a narrow tiebreak defeat to Namibia, ending their unbeaten run. However, the Indian men's 4x200m freestyle relay swimming team qualified for the final after finishing third in their heat. India currently sits 10th in the overall medal tally, which is dominated by Australia with 23 medals. National hopes remain high as star athletes like Mirabai Chanu and Neeraj Chopra prepare for their upcoming events later in the Games schedule.
