Rijiju Clarifies 'Dimagi Naxal' Label Amid Opposition Criticism

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has clarified that the term 'dimagi Naxals' (intellectual Naxals) is reserved exclusively for individuals who support Maoist and separatist ideologies. This statement follows intense criticism from Opposition leaders who accused the government of using the label to stifle democratic dissent. Rijiju emphasized that the government differentiates between legitimate political opposition and those who actively sympathize with violent anti-state movements. He maintained that the Prime Minister’s recent remarks were aimed at protecting national security interests rather than targeting specific political rivals.

The controversy escalated after senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram mockingly stated that he was 'proud' to be a 'dimagi Naxal' if it meant standing up for civil liberties and the poor. Chidambaram's retort was intended to highlight what the Opposition describes as the government's tendency to label critics with derogatory terms. This verbal exchange has sparked a wider debate about the use of security-related labels in political discourse. Opposition parties have unified in their stance that such rhetoric is an attempt to polarize the electorate and distract from pressing economic issues.

The government has frequently used terms like 'Urban Naxal' or 'Dimagi Naxal' to describe what it calls the overground network of Maoist insurgents. Security agencies have claimed that these individuals provide logistical and ideological support to groups operating in the Red Corridor. However, civil society groups and legal experts have raised concerns that these terms lack a clear legal definition and could be misused. The current clarification by Rijiju is seen as an attempt to dial down the political temperature while maintaining the government's firm stance on internal security threats.
