NHAI Launches Digital Local Pass via Rajmargyatra App

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a new digital local pass system for residents living within a 20-km radius of toll plazas. Accessible via the Rajmargyatra mobile app, the initiative aims to facilitate a barrier-less, multi-lane free flow tolling experience. Eligibility is automatically determined through VAHAN details, which link a commuter's address, vehicle number, and FASTag. This replaces the previous manual process that required residents to visit toll plazas with physical supporting documents.

The development follows the implementation of the multi-lane free flow (MLFF) system, which uses high-performance Radio Frequency Identification readers and automatic number plate recognition cameras to process toll payments. Officials noted that local residents within this 20-km zone accounted for a significant portion of toll violations, often relying on familiarity with toll gate staff to bypass fees. By digitizing the process, NHAI intends to curb unauthorized travel and reduce the volume of e-notices issued to frequent commuters who previously lacked the required monthly pass.

Currently active at the Mundka-Bakkarwala toll plaza in Delhi, the service is scheduled for a national rollout in the coming months. Other plazas, including locations in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh, have already been awarded contracts for the MLFF infrastructure. For an average Indian motorist, this transition simplifies travel for those frequently crossing local toll points, ensuring compliance while removing the need for physical paperwork. Ongoing monitoring of the app's performance during this expansion phase will be crucial for the project's national success.
