Rahul Gandhi Backs Ken-Betwa Project Protestors Demanding Fair Relief

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi expressed strong support on Monday for villagers affected by the Ken-Betwa river linking project in Madhya Pradesh. During a meeting with local representatives, he backed their demands for comprehensive rehabilitation and fair financial compensation for displaced families. Gandhi emphasized that developmental projects must not come at the cost of the livelihood and dignity of local communities who have inhabited these lands for generations.

The Ken-Betwa project aims to transfer surplus water from the Ken river to the Betwa basin to irrigate the drought-prone Bundelkhand region. However, the construction of dams and canals threatens to submerge thousands of hectares of land, including parts of the Panna Tiger Reserve. Local residents argue that current compensation packages are insufficient and that the government has failed to provide adequate housing or employment in the planned relocation sites.

The LoP also addressed the Home Ministry regarding recent police action against student demonstrators in New Delhi. He questioned Home Minister Amit Shah on whether the use of lethal force or harsh physical measures against young protestors was authorized by the center. These twin issues of infrastructure-led displacement and student rights are likely to form the core of the opposition's strategy to corner the government in the ongoing monsoon session.
